OBJECTIVE: REDUCE YOUTH SOCIAL ACCESS
Environmental Prevention Strategy
Geared to raise public awareness about underage drinking and youth access to alcohol, and to strengthen the laws against providing alcohol to a minor.
Statewide public awareness campaign that places brightly colored stickers on multi pack of beer and wine coolers that appeal to underage drinkers.
STICKER SHOCK: BASIC INFORMATION
1.Invite media to be present (if the retailer allows), and take pictures (Have law enforcement in uniform beside youth in pics when alcohol is present)
2.Obtain parental permission for youth to participate
3.Obtain retailer permission to conduct the project.
4.Stickers are placed on multi-packs of beer only. They are NOT to cover the bar code, surgeon general’s warning or the primary brand name/ company logo.
5.Require youth wear similar t-shirts with a prevention message
6. Law Enforcement MUST be present at all times during the project with youth.
7. Recognize law enforcement officers & depts who participate in Sticker Shock at a public event covered by the media.
8. Youth must NEVER touch the alcohol. If a multi-pack of beer has to be moved a law enforcement officer or adult volunteer will have to move it.
HOW TO CONDUCT
•Contact retailers, law enforcement and local newspapers, radio, & news stations
•Write letters, follow-up with phone calls and in-person with managers
STICKER SHOCK FOR DRY COUNTIES
1.Refrigerator Magnets in Employee Break-rooms/ Appliance Stores
2.Large “Yellow Stickers” at windows and entrances of mini-marts and groceries
3.Small stickers on Non-Alcoholic Drink Mixers
4.Underage Drinking Posters in local business windows
5.Table Tent Cards on tables and counters of local restaurants and businesses
6.Window Clings in windows of local alcohol retailers or other retailers as permission allows
